When you shop for heat shrink tubing for wire harnesses, cable joints or connector protection, shrink ratio is the first detail you need to get right. Many buyers focus only on diameter and overlook this spec, which often leads to poor fitting, failed waterproofing or extra cost. As a China-based manufacturer of cable protective sleeves, GEDETECH works closely with engineers and procurement buyers worldwide to pick the right tubing for their wiring applications.
The shrink ratio tells you how much the tube reduces in diameter once heated. Three ratios cover most industrial use cases: 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1.
2:1 heat shrink tubing is the standard general grade. After heat application, its inner diameter shrinks to half the original size. It is widely used for simple cable bundling, basic insulation and strain relief. Pick this one when your cable bundle has a consistent diameter and you do not need waterproof sealing. It is cost-effective and easy to source for routine wiring jobs.
3:1 heat shrink tubing is more flexible and commonly seen in dual-wall adhesive-lined versions. It shrinks down to one-third of its starting diameter, making it ideal for multi-wire bundles, irregular connectors and splices. The inner adhesive melts when heated, forming a tight waterproof and corrosion-resistant seal. This is the go-to option for outdoor equipment, automotive wiring and machinery exposed to moisture.
4:1 heat shrink tubing offers the highest shrink range. It can wrap around components with big diameter differences, such as large connectors, thick cable lugs and uneven splices. If your part has a wide size variation, 4:1 tubing will conform tightly. Keep in mind high-ratio tubes usually come at a higher price, so avoid over-specifying if a 3:1 option meets your requirement.
Apart from shrink ratio, wall thickness, working temperature and material also matter. Thin-wall tubing suits light insulation; thick-wall tubing delivers stronger abrasion and mechanical protection. You also need to confirm whether you require adhesive lining for sealed, watertight performance.
A simple sizing rule: select a tube whose original inner diameter is larger than your cable or assembly, while its fully shrunk diameter must be smaller than the finished part. This ensures a snug fit after shrinking.
At GEDETECH, we produce a complete line of cable protection products including heat shrink tubing, cold shrink tubing, fiberglass sleeving and expandable braided sleeves. We accept custom sizes, provide samples and offer technical guidance for low MOQ orders. Our factory is located in Dongguan, Guangdong, supporting stable supply and fast delivery for global distributors and end users.
